Windsor Chairs
If you appreciate the quality of antique furniture, then you'll love these authentic Windsor chairs.

The chairs I make are hand crafted with the same level of bench made quality as those made in the 1700's.  I choose furniture woods carefully to consider optimum strength through grain orientation when I fabricate chair parts.   I use all sorts of hand tools when I make chairs and those include planes, spokeshaves, drawknives, chisels, and a whole bunch of tools that are uniquely suited to the chair maker's art.   The bulk of my chair making time is spent fashioning the various chair parts and joining them together just as they did in the 1700s.  It all happens at my workbench so that I can offer you high quality bench made Windsor chairs.   What matters to me is that I provide you with the desired level of craftsmanship.   I'm proud of the fact that my hand painted Windsor chairs still bear the marks of hand tools being used to shape seats, spindles, and other chair parts.   That makes them truly reproduction Windsor chairs or authentic Windsor chairs.

It isn't uncommon for my customers to
spend a bit of time photographing our chairs as being a new addition to their home.
Why?  Because I treat the building of these chairs as something very special, like the making of a fine wine.  When a customer welcomes a handcrafted Paulson Windsor chair into their homes, my compensation includes the joy of making that happen.   I  also get to be part of the history of people loving these chairs.  What sets these chairs apart from other Windsor chair makers is that I'm committed to fashioning Windsor chairs with the same quality provided by 18th century chair makers.  You won't find me smoothing a reproduction Windsor chair seat with an electric orbital sander.  I smooth our seats the traditional way using hand tools and my methods seek to preserve this chair form in its rightful place as a classic piece of American furniture.   It is our joy to make high quality handmade Windsor chairs that can compliment your household furnishings and be handed down to later generations.

The seat is made of eastern white pine.  The legs are made of selected hardwood; maple, cherry or birch.  The arm, bow, and spindles are made of red oak that is hand split from logs.  The bow and arm are steam bent.   The chairs are finished in one of three colors of milk paint, green, red or black, and then sealed with a polyurethane sealer.

Philadelphia High Back Windsor chair

Dimensions are 46" height x 26" width x 27" depth.

This chair seat is made out of eastern white pine and it has the shape of a shield.  The legs are made out of selected hardwood; involving maple, cherry, or birch.  The crest is made of quarter sawn oak and is steam bent.  The ends of the crest are distinctive in being beautifully carved in low relief with the traditional ear design.  The spindles are made of red oak that has been hand split from logs.  The arm is made of selected hardwood, either cherry or poplar, and it features exquisitely carved knuckles.   The chair can be finished in green, red or black milk paint and is sealed with a polyurethane sealer.  With the black over red milk paint finish (as shown) it offers the appeal of the classic black Windsor chair.

Nantucket Fan Back Chair

Dimensions are 46" height x 26" width x 27" depth.

This Windsor is my favorite one, because it is wonderfully distinctive in its design and for the comfort it offers.  The chair features a seat that is made out of eastern white pine and it has the D shape like the Sack Back.  The legs are larger than the Sack Back and are made out of selected hardwood; involving maple, cherry, or birch.  The crest is made of quarter sawn oak and is steam bent.  The ends of the crest are distinctive in being beautifully carved in low relief with the traditional design.  The spindles are made of red oak that has been carefully hand split from logs.  The arm is made of selected hardwood, either cherry or poplar, and it features exquisitely carved knuckles.   The chair can be finished in green, red or black milk paint and is sealed with a polyurethane sealer.
